Reviews at Monash

Quality at Monash provides the conceptualisation of quality at Monash University. It defines a number of values and principles including:

  • quality as everyone’s responsibility
  • the importance of self-reflection and external reference
  • quality as fitness for purpose

It also defines the Monash Quality Cycle in which review activity is an integral part.

The purpose of academic and support service reviews is to assist the University to assure itself of the quality of its academic endeavour and support services and to utilise learning from this essentially developmental process to effect improvement.

Reviews begin with a self-review phase, followed by the visit of a review panel which normally includes members external to the University.

Guidelines for Review

Each area of the University’s operations is normally reviewed every five years although a shorter cycle is discretionary. In the academic area, the unit being reviewed may be the whole faculty, schools and departments within the faculty, or any combination of these. For support services, the unit for review may be the whole division/centre, a section of the division or any combination of these.

Review Database

Faculties and appropriate Deputy Vice-Chancellors have responsibility for defining the units to be reviewed and the rolling five year schedule of reviews. This information is available from the reviews database.

CHEQ Assistance with Reviews

CHEQ provides assistance to self-review teams and external review panels in a number of different ways. These include:


Review planner

An excel spreadsheet that provides a D-day minus interactive means of planning the logistical and administrative tasks necessary for a review.


Evaluations data

Monash undertakes a large number of evaluations to support ongoing quality improvement. Further details are available from the Evaluations and Surveys webpage.

CHEQ is willing to assist with special-purpose analysis of University evaluations such as providing Monash Experience Questionnaire (MEQ) results by course for review purposes. This service is subject to negotiation of appropriate time frames for the analysis and report. Contact Associate Professor Sid Nair, extn 51544.



Direct Support

CHEQ Quality Advisers provide direct support for reviews in a number of different ways. These include:

  • providing individual advice to self-review team leaders
  • briefing or working with self-review teams
  • briefing external review panels (where possible and on request)
  • conducting post-review debriefing
  • conducting general workshops on reviews
