Dr Alan Finkel AM PhD FTSE Current Term: 01/01/2008 - 31/12/2011 Dr Finkel commenced as Chancellor of Monash University in 2008. Dr Finkel is an engineer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. In 1983 he founded the Californian company Axon Instruments. In March 2000 successfully launched on the Australian Stock Exchange and traded till it was acquired in 2004. Dr Finkels instrumentation inventions for neuroscience research have benefited both the investigator and the community and have been used worldwide for basic research and for pharmaceutical drug discovery. Dr Finkel is passionate about science. He is the Executive Publisher of Cosmos magazine, a magazine he launched in 2005. The aim of Cosmos is to inspire and educate others about the role of science in our community, past, present and future. He serves as chairman of the National Research Centre for the Prevention of Child Abuse at Monash University and he is a director of the Florey Neuroscience Institutes. Professor Richard Larkins AO FTSE, MD BS Melb., PhD London, Hon LLD Melb., FRACP FRCP London, FRCP Ireland, HonFAM Malaysia, HonFAM Singapore, HonFRCP Thailand, HonFACP USA, HonFCeylon CP. Current Term: 01/09/2003 – 30/06/2009 Professor Richard Larkins commenced as Vice-Chancellor at Monash University on 1 September 2003. Professor Larkins has had a distinguished career in medicine, scientific research and academic management. From 1998 to 2003 he was Dean of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne and held the James Stewart Chair of Medicine at Royal Melbourne Hospital from 1984 to 1997. In 2002 Professor Larkins was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to medicine and health. In 2007 Professor Larkins was appointed to the Council of Melbourne Grammar School and became Chair of Universities Australia in 2008. Top

Professor Jayne M. Godfrey PhD Qld MEc Syd BCom(Hons) Melb DipEd (MSCV) FCPA FCA, MAICD, CFTP Deputy Dean (Research) Current Term: 01/01/2008 - 31/12/2009 This is Professor Jayne Godfrey's first term on Monash University Council. Professor Jayne Godfrey is Professor of Financial Accounting, and President of the Academic Board. As well as an extensive list of publications in high quality internationally refereed journals, Jayne's publications include several books – one of which is the leading Australian text on accounting theory and is now in its sixth edition; another being an analysis of the international effects of the globalisation of accounting standards. She serves on editorial boards, and referees for numerous international and Australian journals. For her service to Australian society through business leadership, Jayne was awarded Australia’s Centenary Medal. She has served on the Australian Accounting Standards Board, which sets accounting rules with the force of law for Australian companies, and is currently a member of the national Water Accounting Development Committee. She is a past Telstra Businesswoman of the Year national finalist, director of a state borrowing authority, and CPA Australia Divisional President. She has also been President of the Accounting Association of Australia and New Zealand (now AFAANZ), and frequently addresses international and national business and community concerning accounting, finance, and corporate governance research issues. Dr Carol Williams BMus (Hons) PhD Adel Current Term: 01/01/2007 - 31/12/2008 Dr Williams has been a member of Monash University Council since 2005. Dr Williams has been a member of the academic staff of Monash University since 1976. Initially employed in the Department of Music as a lecturer with “early music” as the specific interest area of interest in both research and teaching, she is now a Senior Lecturer in the School of Historical Studies in the Faculty of Arts, and coordinates a range of subjects including “Arthur: History and Myth” (2007) and “Troubadours and Street Singers” (2005). Dr Williams is a performing musician who plays Celtic and Gothic harps and early bowed string instruments in Melbourne’s longest running medieval music ensemble, Acord. Carol’s research focus over the past couple of years has been directed to an ARC funded collaborative project involving a wide ranging study of Johannes Grocheio, an Aristotelian music theorist associated with the University of Paris in the late 13^th century. Dr Williams has a strong record of commitment and participation in the Monash University community at all levels and is currently Branch President of the National Tertiary Education Union. Top

Mr Jeffrey Bender B.Ec (Mon), Dip.Ed (Mon), Grad Dip Lib (Melb CAE), M.Lib (Mon) Current Term: 01/01/2008 – 31/12/2009 Mr Bender has been a member of Monash University Council since 2007. Mr Bender's current position is Project Manager with the Education Plan Implementation Corps which is undertaking the Review of Coursework. He is based at the Caulfield Campus. He has previously worked in the (then) Office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and in other project management positions at Monash. Jeffrey was also a senior reference librarian in the Matheson and Hargrave-Andrew Libraries. He has held a number of positions outside Monash including the Victorian Office of Training and Tertiary Education, Australian Volunteers International and the University of the South Pacific. Jeffrey is currently Vice-President (General) Monash University Branch of NTEU. His personal interests include involvement in sustainable community development. Top

Mr Sumeet Katariya Current Term: 01/01/2008 - 31/12/2008 This is Mr Katariya's first term on Council. In 1997 Mr Katariya completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Pune University, India) with a major in Banking and Finance and in 1998 he completed a Diploma certified course on Interior Design. Currently Mr Katariya is studying a Masters of Professional Accounting. Mr Katariya started his career as an entrepreneur from 1998-2006 as Managing Director for S’corp (Franchisee of Hallmark cards & gifts), India; Managing Director Omega Pest Control, India; Managing Director Omega Pesticides, India; Director, Annanya Publications Pty Ltd. Printing and Publishing Daily News Paper (Franchisee of Jansatta Daily Hindi News Paper, A division of Indian Express Group), India; and Managing Director, S.K.I.L (Sumeet Katariya Interiors and Landscaping), India. Voluntary work includes: 2005-2006 Secretary for Raipur Round Table, India. A club spread across the world in some countries called ad 20-40. The motto of the club is to provide education to the under privileged in India; 2007-2008 Greeting Card Convenor Raipur Round Table, India, General Representatives Monash Student Union, Caulfield campus and also the Student Representatives at The Scholarly Resources Committee, Monash University Caulfield campus; 2008-2009 Post Graduate Officer Monash Student Union, Caulfield campus. Mr Ben Maxfield Current Term: 01/01/2008 - 31/12/2008 This is Mr Maxfield's first term on Council. Mr Maxfield is currently undertaking a Bachelor in Business & Commerce with a major in Economics, minor in Politics. Mr Maxfield served as General Representative & President of the Berwick Student Association (2007) and represented students on the Business & Economics Faculty Board & Academic Progress Committee. Ben is heavily involved in Clubs & Societies at Monash including the Ski Club, Soccer Club, ALP Club and the Marketing Society. Ms Lesley Boston BA BEd Melb MACE Current Term: 01/01/2007 - 31/12/2009 Ms Boston has been a member of Monash University Council since 2004. Ms Boston was Principal of MacRobertson Girls High School 1996 - 2004 and Mentone Girls Secondary College 1989 - 1996. She was President of the Association of Girls State Secondary Schools of Victoria and Vice-President of the Alliance of Girl's Schools of Australasia. Ms Boston is an Honourary Life Member of that Alliance, a Member of the Australian College of Educators, an Honourary Judge of the Melbourne Awards and an advisor to ANZ Trustees for the Mary Jane Lewis Scholarship Foundation. Ms Boston is President of Convocation, University of Melbourne and has been on the committee since 1992. She is a Member of the Honours Committee at the University of Melbourne and was previously a member of the University Relations Committee, the Student Support Committee and the Student Theatre Board. Dr Charles Curwen CVO OBE Hon LLD, FIPA Current Term: 12/02/2008 - 31/12/2010 Dr Curwen has been a member of Council since April 2005. Dr Curwen is Official Secretary and Chief Administrator of The Office of The Governor of Victoria, and has an advisory role to the Victorian Government in Trade, Investment and Biotechnology in North Asia and the USA. Dr Curwen is a Fellow of The Institute of Public Administration, is a sworn Clerk of the Executive Council, is a Member of the Board of the Howard Florey Institute, and is Victoria's representative on the Order of Australia Council. Mr Paul Ramler AM DipBusMktg MBus(Hons) CIT ACIT, FAIM, AFAMI Current Term: 01/01/2007 - 31/12/2009 Mr Ramler has been a member of Monash University Council since 1990 and was appointed Deputy Chancellor in 1992. Mr Ramler was the last President of the Council of Chisholm Institute of Technology prior to its merger with Monash University in 1990 and served the Institute and its precedent Caulfield Institute of Technology since 1971. Mr Peter Redlich AO LLB Melb Current Term: 01/01/2006 - 31/12/2008 Mr Redlich has been a member of Monash University Council since 2006. Mr Redlich is currently the chairman of legal firm Holding Redlich. Mr Redlich has extensive experience on corporate and government boards and has been an adviser to the trade union movement and government over many years. Top
Dr Leanne Rowe AM MB BS Dip RACOG FRACGP FAICD Current Term: 12/02/2008 - 31/12/2010 Dr Rowe has been a member of Monash University Council since mid 2005 and was appointed Deputy Chancellor in 2007. Dr Rowe is the past Chairman of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. She has been trained in areas such as Board Governance, finance, human resources, quality and research and ethics in her position as a Director on the Board of Barwon Health. Dr Rowe is a rural general practitioner as well as an author for Publisher-Allen and Unwin. Top
Dr John Zillman AO BA BSc (Hons) Qld MSc Melb PhD Wisconsin Hon D Sc Current Term: 15/04/2008 - 31/12/2008 Dr Zillman has been a member of Monash University Council since 2005. Dr Zillman was President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering 2003–06 and President of the National Academies Forum 2005-06. From 1978 to 2003 he was Commonwealth Director of Meteorology and from 1994 to 2005 Principal Delegate of Australia to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He was President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) from 1995 to 2003 and he served as President of the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) in 2005. Mr Yehudi Blacher BA(Hons), MA Current Term: 11/02/2008 - 31/12/2010 This is Mr Blacher's first term on Council. Mr Blacher is a graduate of Monash University and has been employed within the Victorian Public sector since 1980. Mr Blacher was appointed as the first Secretary of the Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) in August 2007. This new "super" department was created to ensure community development across the state would be at the centre of planning and urban development. Between 2002 and 2007, Mr Blacher was the Secretary of the Department for Victorian Communities which spear-headed innovative, successful community strengthening strategies transforming the way government worked with local communities. Prior to his roles as Secretary, Yehudi was Deputy Secretary in the Department of Premier and Cabinet. Top

Professor Colin Bourke MBE BCom BEd Melb LLB Adel MEd Canb TPTC Geelong FACE, FAIM Current Term: 01/01/2007 - 31/12/2009 Professor Bourke has been a member of Monash University Council since 2001. Professor Bourke has a Master of Education degree and undergraduate qualifications in commerce and education. Professor Bourke has been involved in Aboriginal Education at local, state and national levels in various capacities, since 1956. He has held a range of University and Public Service positions and was formerly Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Aboriginal and Islander Studies, University of South Australia. Professor Bourke has written numerous papers on Aboriginal issues. Top
Mr Shane Buggle B Comm NUI, DPA, FCA (Ire), FCA (Aust), FCPA Current Term: 15/05/2007 - 31/12/2009 Mr Buggle has been a member of Council since 2007. Mr Buggle has held the position of Group General Manager Finance at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited since August 2005, where he is responsible for finance MIS, financial compliance, external and regulatory reporting and financial policy. Prior to this, Mr Buggle was CFO Personal and also CFO Consumer Finance. Mr Buggle has also held senior finance roles with Zurich Financial Services, PWC and CPA Australia. Mr Buggle is a member of the National Executive of the Group of 100. Top
Ms Penny Hutchinson BA(Hons) London CA AMusA AICD Current Term: 01/01/2006 - 31/12/2008 Ms Hutchinson has been a member of Council since 2000. Ms Hutchinson is currently the Director of Arts Victoria. Her position prior to Arts Victoria was with BDO where she was a Partner of the firm, a Director of BDO Consulting and the National Director – Government Consulting. Top
Mr Ian Nethercote FIE. Aust, CP Eng, FAICD, FAIM Current Term: 31/3/2008 - 31/12/2010 This is Mr Nethercote's first term on Council. Mr Nethercote is the Chief Executive of Victoria’s largest power generating Company and Australia's largest open cut mine reporting directly to the GEAC Board. Mr Nethercote has been employed in the electricity industry since 1976 and has held a number of key strategic and line management positions within the industry. Mr Nethercote has played a key role in the reform of the Australian electricity industry and in the formulation and establishment of the competitive electricity market and associated rules. He has also contributed to the future direction of the industry through his active involvement as a past Director and Chairman of the Energy Supply Association of Australia (esaa) and his continued involvement in numerous government task forces, round tables and membership of various other industry groups and community. Mr Nethercote is also the Chair of Loy Yang Marketing Management Company, Chair of the Monash University Gippsland Advisory Council, Director of MTE Research Pty Ltd, Director of National Generators Forum Limited, Director of Institute of Public Affairs and a registered assessor of mechanical testing for the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA). Mr Ian Pyman B Juris LLB Current Term: 01/01/2006 - 31/12/2008 Mr Pyman has been a member of Monash University Council since mid 2005. Mr Pyman is a director of Lewinsky Pyman Frees Pty Ltd, a private corporate advisory firm based in Melbourne, and a principal of Business Redirections, a business and legal consulting firm. He is also a director of Merchant Capital Limited, a company operating in the financial services industry, and its home loan lending subsidiary, Greenearth Financial Pty Ltd. Mr Pyman was previously a partner for 20 years in one of Australia’s largest legal firms, Allens Arthur Robinson. Apart from the Council of Monash University, Mr Pyman is also the Chairman of a children’s charity, Brainwave Australia, and is Chairman of the Monash Law School Foundation. Top
