Health Smart - make the right choice
What is Health Smart
Health Smart is a new Monash initiative to encourage staff and students to make a healthy and sustainable choice when ordering catering and purchasing food from outlets on campus.
From December you will begin to see food items and catering menu's being marked with either a Health Smart or Earth Smart logo.

Health Smart
A Health Smart option is the healthy choice on the menu. Items with the Health Smart logo meets one of the following criteria:
- Mainly consists of either fruits, vegetables, wholegrain cereals, fat-free/low-fat milk products, yoghurts and cheese, lean meat or fish; or
- is low in saturated fat, salt and sugar

Earth Smart
An Earth Smart option is the sustainable (healthy and environmentally preferable) option. Items with the Earth Smart logo meet one of the following criteria;
- is vegetarian or vegan, or
- contains local, seasonally available ingredients, or
- certified organic, biodynamic or free-range ingredients; or
- sustainably caught fish (MSC certified)
AND
- is Health Smart
- does not include bottled water
Earthsmart menu items and catering should be offered on non-disposable, reusable crockery and tableware, reducing the volume of waste associated with the option.
How can staff and students get involved:
-
Purchase a Health Smart or Earth Smart item from a food outlet
-
Order at least 1 Health Smart or Earth Smart item from a catering menu for meetings and events. If this is achieved staff are encouraged to promote the event or meeting as Health Smart certified, and include the Health Smart logo on invitations. Email Wellbeing at Monash here and include your department name, event/meeting type, date and campus location and at least one Health Smart food item you have ordered. You will then be provided with the Health Smart logo to include on your invitations. Your department will also be listed on this webpage as organising a Health Smart certified event.
Who has been involved in developing Health Smart
Wellbeing at Monash has worked together with the Office of Environmental Sustainability and Monash food outlets at many campuses to ensure the program is practical and sustainable.
The Monash University Club and Meeting Point at Clayton campus are both currently trialling the program.
