Step Warriors - stepping out in South Africa!

The Step Warriors team won the Monash 10,000 Steps Challenge last year by completing the Challenge first.  This year they are determined to go not one, but 10,000 better!

Consisting of six team members from Monash University's South Africa campus, they were then entered into the Global Corporate Challenge 2008 competing with 7,000 teams, coming second overall.

This year there are over 8,000 teams in the Global Corporate Challenge, and again the Step Warriors are in second place and working hard. Peter Goddard, Director of Operations, Monash South Africa is the team manager and has four ladies from the housekeeping department and two men from Campus Protection Services, as part of his team.

Currently the Step Warriors have a team walk once a week and are planning to increase this to twice a week, everyone is working hard to try and beat their personal best and the girls are loosing inches!

According to Peter, "one good thing in South Africa is that the public transport is very limited and the girls all walk to work and on the weekend they spend a lot of time at church worshipping of course with their pedometers on."

Peter also says that they are on track to overtake first place, we wish the Step Warriors the best of luck in completing their steps!  Story: Lloyd Gordon, Media Assistant, Monash Sport.

-Soloist Michael Kieran Harvey
Interval
-Rimsky-Korsavok Scheherazade

Families and GPs unite to fight obesity

Doctors find it difficult to raise the issue of childhood obesity with parents even though they might be aware of the importance of managing the problem according to Monash University research.

The research also shows that this is despite the fact that parents want their GPs to raise the issue, provide advice and help them to manage their child's weight.

To help overcome this stigma, researchers from the Department of General Practice are working with parents to remove some of the hurdles they experience when seeking GP support.

Read more about this story here. Parents can participate in the study by calling Dr Kay Jones on +61 3 8575 2224 or Leah Falkingham +61 3 8575 2223.
