Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must be:

  • an Australian citizen or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa, and
  • a commencing or continuing undergraduate student, and
  • enrolled or intending to enrol in a full-time Commonwealth-Supported Place undergraduate degree* or graduate diploma** at a Monash campus in Australia, and
  • able to demonstrate financial hardship.

* Students enrolled in the Diploma of Tertiary Studies (course 2552) are eligible as long as they meet all other criteria for the scholarship.

** In an area of study designated as of national priority, and where the graduate diploma is required for initial registration to practice in the chosen national priority area, eg a Graduate Diploma of Education.

Students that have previously completed the requirements of a Bachelors degree or high-level award are not eligible for Commonwealth Scholarships, unless such an award is a prerequisite to the current undergraduate course of study eg an honours degree.

In addition to the above, students applying for the Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship must meet the following requirements:

a.) Within the four years prior to commencing their course at university, students must have either:

i.) lived in a rural or regional area for at least three years, or
ii.) completed the final two years of schooling in a high school or college in a rural or regional area, or
iii.) moved away from a rural or regional area to complete the final two years of schooling at a high school or to undertake vocational training eg TAFE in a major city, and

b.) it must be necessary for students to move from the rural or regional area in order to undertake their university course, or, in the case of students who moved from a rural or regional area to complete their secondary schooling it must be necessary for the student to remain in a major city in order to undertake their university course, and

c.) the student will incur additional accommodation costs, and

d.) the student is enrolled as an on-campus student.

Students are only eligible to receive a maximum of eight scholarship payments (ie twice yearly for up to four years).

Selection criteria

Awarded on the basis of need to eligible applicants.

Value

$4,415 per annum for the duration of the degree, up to a maximum of 4 years.

Retention

Recipients must maintain full-time enrolment and verify their eligibility each semester to continue receiving the award.

Deferability

This scholarship cannot be deferred.
