Ying Cai, a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) student, said she was delighted to have received the Monash University International Scholarship for Excellence.

“I was surprised – and very excited – and felt that the scholarship would give me more motivation to perform well,” she said.

“It helps cover general expenses, such as books and stationery, and also reduces some of the burden of living expenses such as transport.”

Ying attended Shanghai Shi Xi Secondary School in China and is currently living with several other students close to the university’s Clayton campus.

“My parents are still in China, so I moved in with other Monash students,” she said. “Living with students from other countries has been great as you learn about the cultures of other nationalities. It’s also a good support network.”

Ying said she chose Monash because of its strong reputation in China and its international focus. “I’ve found Monash to be very multicultural. It has a friendly environment and excellent resources for students,” she said.

Ying would like to eventually complete her CPA and work for one of the large accounting firms in Melbourne in audit and insurance.
