Equal Opportunity On Line Training Module 3: Staff & Student Equity

What Does Student Equity Mean?

The Department of Education Science and Training (DEST) provides funding for various programs to improve the access, participation, success and retention rates of students in various equity groups. Students in these groups have been shown to experience significant disadvantage in higher education. This is known as the Higher Education Equity Program (HEEP).

Monash University is committed to supporting under-represented groups in their higher education on the basis of merit, and to providing an environment which is supportive of all students and is open to the perspectives and experiences of individuals and groups from different backgrounds.

Student Equity Groups

  • Students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Students from a non-English speaking background
  • Students with disabilities
  • Students from rural and/or isolated areas
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • Women in non-traditional fields of study
  • Students who have been absent from the education system for a significant period of time

The specific needs of these groups should be taken into account in the development of curriculum and teaching strategies.

Further information is available from the Student Equity Unit Website.
