Transport and Parking - Student Equity Unit

Transport

Public transport is a popular choice for many students-it's cheap, environmentally friendly and saves you the stress of driving (maybe in peak hour traffic) and from the hassles of finding a car park (which can be quite difficult especially at the beginning of each semester, even if you have a permit). Apart from that there is a high cost in running a car. As well as petrol costs, just keeping up with the maintenance, insurance and registration can put you in a real financial hole.

Clayton

There are several bus services which stop inside the campus grounds and connect with the following railway stations: Belgrave, Bentleigh, Blackburn, Boronia, Box Hill, Clayton and more. Timetables are available from the Information desk in the Campus Centre and are displayed on the wall. Timetables are displayed at bus stops as well. You can find out more information as to which train connects to which bus line and Monash campuses on the website: www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au. Other bus services stop at the northern end of the campus.

Train timetables can be bought from any railway station or contact the Met on 131 638 to have one sent to you. Bus and tram timetables are also available from the Met. Railway stations are listed under Public Transport in the White Pages telephone book.

Clayton has a very effective carpooling service. If you're finding it hard to get to uni, or if you would rather leave your car at home, or if you want to make better use of your car and share fuel costs, then register with the Monash Student Association for names of people who are willing to share lifts.

Pick up a Clayton Campus Diary/Directory at the Information Desk. This is a great little book with heaps of information about practically everything, and at least tells you where to start looking for things. It's also a diary so you can record important dates and when assessment tasks are due, and, of course, social events!

Caulfield

Caulfield Railway Station is directly opposite the University. You can catch a train from here to the city and other suburbs. Trams also run right past the campus into the city and suburbs. Here's where a road atlas will be really helpful. It's great for all types of information. A great gift if the "rellies" are looking for something to give you.

Peninsula

The best idea here is to take the bus from the campus to the Frankston Railway Station. The bus numbers to look for are 775, 776, 782 and 783. Pick up a timetable to save you time! If you want to walk to the station or vice versa, it will take you about 15 minutes.

Gippsland

There is a bus that calls at the campus hourly to take you into Morwell, Traralgon or Moe.

Trains run to and from Melbourne and V/Line services run from East Gippsland. There are also air links to Albury/Wodonga, Sydney and Tasmania.

Parkville

Trams run regularly past the campus and travel to most places in the inner city and out to some suburbs. From the inner city you will need to catch Tram No 19 just outside Flinders Street Station to get you to the campus.

If you want to travel by train out to the suburbs, the Royal Park Railway Station is less than a kilometre away.

Berwick

You are within walking distance of the railway station, or Bus Route 840 will take you into the campus.

Travel Concessions

Apply for these at Student Services on Clayton, Caulfield and Peninsula campuses, at Student Administration on Gippsland campus, Reception on the ground floor at Berwick and the Registrar's Office on Parkville campus.

Statewide Tertiary Cards provide concession travel on all Victorian Public Transport services. You are eligible for travel concessions if you are a full-time student. Only Australian students studying an approved course (undergrad or Dip Ed course) are eligible for MET and V/Line concessions.

VPT Country Tertiary Card provides concession travel on all services operated by the Public Transport Corporation; MET buses throughout Melbourne.

International Youth and Travel Cards (entitling you to many concessions overseas and in Australia) are available from STA Travel branch. Telephone 9905 53128. These cards can be authorised at Student Services.

Advice is available on all travel needs including routine vaccinations from the Health Service on each campus. If you're in the city and are going to travel by public transport to uni each day, buy a weekly or monthly ticket - it will save you money.

Intercampus shuttle buses run at different times between
Clayton/Caulfield
Clayton/Berwick
Clayton/Peninsula

If you are travelling between these campuses this service is $2.
You may be requested to show your ID.
Timetables are available from the Information Desks at the three campuses.

Where do I park?

If you travel to uni by car, the cost, apart from keeping it on the road, is significant. On top of the usual car costs, you will have to buy a parking permit on most campuses, so make sure you can afford the upkeep before you commit yourself. Do your homework on costs.

Parking is available on campus for staff and students based on a permit system. See the web site www.monash.edu.au/campuses/peninsula/parking/ for costs and more information on dates when you can buy permits.

Cycling

Of course, there is always the bike. Bike riding is a great way to keep fit and healthy. You'll need to talk to someone from Security and Traffic for information regarding storing your bike. You also need to make sure that you have a good lock for it as well.
