Overview

This course is for staff who want to increase their self-confidence and personal empowerment through better understanding and working with their emotional intelligence.  It is most suited to those who want to be more influential, who are seeking to use self-awareness to increase personal freedom and choices. 

This course covers emotional development, expression, and recognition, and the ways emotional beliefs impact on confidence and then, behaviour.  It will cover reasons for the different ways people respond emotionally and the ways these responses can impede their interactions in the work place.  Techniques for handling the more difficult emotions of anxiety and anger are included, as are skills for handling emotional situations such as confrontation and emotive group situations. Methods that assist to change emotional reactions and therefore the ability to behave differently, to benefit quality of life and work, will be learnt and practised.

Course Content

  • The ways that emotional expression and beliefs are learnt and how they shape our confidence and behaviour
  • The range of individual differences in beliefs about, expression of and responses to different emotions
  • Beliefs and habits that frequently cause people to be unable to be assertive and/or self confident in certain situations
  • Traumatic learning and the development of “trigger” situations
  • Anger, anxiety and worry; techniques for recognising, coping and modifying these feelings and being more empowered
  • Methods for changing emotional reactions to people and situations
  • Expressing feelings and opinions effectively and being influential in the workplace
  • Giving and receiving feedback effectively
  • Handling confrontation and conflict

Learning Approach

This course combines a mix of theory, interaction and reflection. There are opportunities to discuss issues and concerns, to explore alternative approaches and to practice new skills. The sessions are respectful of each person's safety and the different ways people like to participate and learn. Each course is adapted to the aims and challenges of each particular group.
