Overview

This series is specifically designed for staff new to the role of supervisor or team leader and those who recognise the need to refresh their skills for leading a team. Emphasis will be placed on improving personal competence and developing strategies for managing and supervising individuals and teams. To maximise the transfer of learning back to the work place, participants, in partnership with their supervisors, will identify skills and behaviours required to achieve work unit and individual goals for each participant.

Intended Outcomes

The program will cover areas such as distinguishing the difference between leadership and management, working with a team, the role of managers and leaders, communication and effective people management skills. These skills will be useful for assisting individual as well as team development

Course Content

This workshop will provide the Monash context and set the framework for the rest of the program. A member of the Vice-Chancellor's Group will make the keynote presentation outlining Monash University, our Statement of Purpose and the Monash Values including the university's strategic direction.

The program will cover the following:

Principles of Leadership & Management

  • Th e difference between management and leadership
  • The role of leaders and suervisors/managers

Effective workplace Communciation

  • Dialogue to gain share understanding
  • Difficulties in communicating and developing effective communication strategies
  • Understanding Self and Developing others
  • Understanding learning styles and how individuals, groups and organsiations learn
  • Understanding  what makes effective working  relationships and coaching for improved performance

Building Strong Work Relationships

  • Systemic thinking
  • principles of effective teamwork
  • Team effectiveness

Working as a Supervisor

  • Operational accountabilities and job roles
  • Time management
  • Prioritisation of work
  • Planning and linking actions to the Monash Plan

Work Based Project

  • A requirement of your participation is that you complete a work based project
