Introduction - Visiting Academics (non-residents of Australia)

Who does this Cover?

This policy covers an eminent person from overseas who is invited to Monash University as a Visiting Academic, who will participate in:

  • Research
  • Seminars
  • Conferences
  • Present an occasional lecture

The visitor will be offered either an invitation to visit or a temporary appointment. Subject to Visa eligibility - see Visa Information for more details.

How Long can the Visiting Academic Stay?

Visiting Academics who are Non-Residents of Australia, and hold an appropriate Visa, may stay for the period of the invitation.

The average stay of a Visiting Academics is for a period of up to 183 days.

In exceptional circumstances the visit may be for longer periods, however Monash University’s policy is that appointments will always be for less than one year. Any contract that is for longer than stated above, must have prior approval from the Divisional Director, Human Resources Division.

Where are costs to be charged to?

All costs associated with the Visiting Academic are to be charged to the Department/School, Faculty.

Any costs associated with the sponsorship undertaking may incur a charge against the host unit's funds.

Titles

The title of a Visiting Academic appointed as a staff member for the period of their visit will reflect the level of appointment.
